5 PM Tropical Storm Debby Update: Potential Historic Rainfall and Flooding Expected

SUMMERVILLE, SC (8/4) — The latest update on Tropical Storm Debby indicates that it is expected to strengthen into a hurricane tonight before making landfall in the Florida Big Bend area on Monday. This storm is projected to be a significant weather event for the Southeast, particularly in terms of rainfall, with totals potentially rivaling those recorded during the historic October 2015 floods.

Key Messages from the National Hurricane Center (NHC):

  1. Heavy Rainfall and Flooding: The NHC warns of potentially historic heavy rainfall across southeast Georgia and South Carolina through Friday morning, which could result in catastrophic flooding. The heaviest rain is expected from the Florida Big Bend region through southeast Georgia and into the Coastal Plain of the Carolinas.

  2. Storm Surge Danger: A life-threatening storm surge is expected along parts of the Gulf Coast of Florida, with inundation levels of 6 to 10 feet above ground forecasted between the Ochlockonee and Suwannee Rivers on Monday. Residents in these areas should heed local officials' advice and evacuate if necessary.

  3. Hurricane Conditions: Hurricane conditions are anticipated on Monday in parts of the Florida Big Bend region, currently under a Hurricane Warning. Tropical storm conditions will begin this evening and are expected to persist through Monday along Florida’s west coast, including the Tampa Bay area, which is under a Tropical Storm Warning.

  4. Southeast U.S. Coast Impacts: Dangerous storm surge and wind impacts are expected along portions of the southeast U.S. coast from northeastern Florida to North Carolina through midweek. Storm surge warnings and tropical storm watches and warnings have been issued for these areas, urging residents to prepare for severe conditions.

As the storm progresses, further updates will provide more precise information on its intensity and path. There is also a possibility that Debby could re-enter the Atlantic Ocean, potentially strengthening again.
