Dorchester County officials have issued an update on the current flooding situation in the area, warning residents to remain vigilant as water levels remain dangerously high.
Overnight, the Edisto River crested at Givhans at 17.2 feet and is currently at 17.14 feet. While the levels have slightly decreased, those downriver may still see a minor rise in water levels over the next few hours. These levels are categorized as major flood levels, posing significant risks to safety.
Additionally, the Ashley River is being closely monitored as it continues to rise, currently standing at 25.29 feet. With both rivers at critical levels, the potential for further flooding remains a concern.
County officials are urging residents to stay safe and take the following precautions:
Avoid driving through flooded roads: Even six inches of moving water can knock you down, and 12 inches can sweep your vehicle away.
Be prepared to evacuate: If you live in a flood-prone area, have an evacuation plan ready.
Stay clear of downed power lines and floodwaters: These may be electrically charged and pose a severe hazard.
For any questions or concerns related to flooding, storm damage, shelters, or road closures, residents are encouraged to contact the Dorchester County Call Center at (843) 832-0393.
The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as necessary. Your safety is the county's top priority during this challenging time.
