Dorchester County Parks and Recreation Announces Exciting Lineup of Upcoming Programs and Events



Dorchester County Parks and Recreation has a full schedule of engaging and educational events planned for the coming weeks. From interactive nature programs to family-friendly activities, there’s something for everyone. Here's a rundown of what’s happening:


Marine Invertebrates Program


Date: Friday, August 30th, 10:00 - 11:00 AM

Location: Ashley River Park

Details: The South Carolina Aquarium Outreach program will bring marine invertebrates for an interactive learning experience. This event is included with the park's gate fee or membership.


Homeschool Park Co-Op/Enrichment Program: All Things Animals


Dates: Fridays, August 30th - October 18th, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Location: Ashley River Park

Age Range: 5 - 12

Details: An eight-week program that offers outdoor exploration, STEM activities, and creative play. This program encourages teamwork, critical thinking, and artistic expression.


Kayak the Ashley River with Blueway Adventures


Dates:

  • Tuesday, September 3rd, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

  • Wednesday, September 11th, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

  • Wednesday, October 2nd, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

  • Thursday, October 17th, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM


    Location: Howard Bridgman Boat Landing


    Details: Paddle along the scenic Upper Ashley River with a master naturalist guide who will share insights about the river's wildlife and history. All necessary gear is provided. Pre-registration is required.


Pond Ecology for Adults


Date: Wednesday, September 4th, 8:00 - 9:30 AM

Location: Ashley River Park

Age Range: 16 & up

Details: Dive into the world of pond ecosystems with hands-on activities, including water quality testing and species identification. Participants will learn about the importance of biodiversity and ecological balance.


Eco Explorers


Date: Thursday, September 5th, 10:00 - 11:00 AM

Location: Ashley River Park

Age Range: 5 - 12

Details: This engaging ecology program allows children to explore food webs, learn about park animals, and observe animal biofacts. Pre-registration is required.


Grandparents Day Nature Walk


Date: Sunday, September 8th, 4:00 - 5:00 PM

Location: Ashley River Park

Details: Celebrate Grandparents Day with a nature walk led by park staff. This family-friendly event includes a special treat for grandparents and is included with gate admission.


PuzzlePalooza


Dates and Locations:

  • Ashley River Park: Thursday, September 12th & November 14th, 6:00 - 8:00 PM

  • Davis-Bailey Park: Thursday, September 26th, 6:00 - 8:00 PM


    Details: Teams of 2-4 people will compete to complete a 500-piece puzzle in under two hours. Pre-registration is required, and spots are limited.


Walk with a Doc


Date: 2nd Saturday of each month, 10:00 - 11:00 AM

Location: Ashley River Park

Details: Join local physician Dr. Asia McDonald for a walk in the park. This free program combines physical activity with health education in a relaxed, natural setting.


Lowcountry Dogs: May the Dogs Be with You


Date: Saturday, September 14th, 1:00 - 5:00 PM

Location: Ashley River Park

Details: A Star Wars-themed dog festival featuring character appearances, adoptable dogs, food trucks, and dog activities. Sponsored by local businesses.


Nature Walk and Talk


Date: Monday, September 16th, 9:00 - 11:00 AM

Location: Rosebrock Park

Details: Join park staff for a guided nature walk, learning about native birds, plants, and animals along the way. This event is free and perfect for the whole family.


Family Fishing Clinics


Dates:

  • Saturday, September 21st, 9:00 - 12:00 PM

  • Saturday, October 12th, 9:00 - 12:00 PM

  • Saturday, November 9th, 9:00 - 12:00 PM


    Location: Ashley River Park


    Details: Learn fishing basics with SCDNR instructor Tom Lindenmayer. Equipment is provided, and the event is free with gate fee or park membership.


Stormwater Pond Buffer Workshop


Date: Wednesday, September 25th, 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Location: Ashley River Park

Details: This workshop offers hands-on experience in creating and maintaining shoreline buffers for stormwater ponds. Ideal for garden clubs, HOA representatives, and more. Registration is required.
