Preview: Summerville Town Council Meeting Scheduled for Thursday, August 15, 2024

The Summerville Town Council will convene on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Annex Building, located at 200 South Main Street. This meeting, originally scheduled for August 8 but postponed due to a weather event, will cover a broad range of important community topics.

The meeting will begin with an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Councilmember Kima Garten-Schmidt, followed by employee recognition and a special proclamation presentation.

Among the key items on the agenda is the approval of minutes from previous meetings, including the Town Council Meeting on July 11 and the Special Council Meeting on August 5.

A significant discussion point will be the second and final reading of an ordinance to annex approximately 13.5 acres at the end of W. Smith Street. This land, currently zoned TRM (Transitional Residential) in Dorchester County, will be rezoned to MF-R (Multifamily Residential) upon annexation into the Town of Summerville's municipal limits, impacting Council District 3.

The Council will also introduce a resolution adopting the new Employee Handbook, which may lead to updates in town employee policies and operations. Additionally, the meeting will feature a discussion on committee appointments by the Mayor and Councilmembers, potential changes to the composition of the Board of Architectural Review, and a highly anticipated presentation and discussion of reassessment calculations. This reassessment is expected to have a direct impact on property taxes and valuations, making it a crucial topic for local residents and property owners.

In the "Miscellaneous" section, the Council will address the location for a new skatepark, a Memorandum of Understanding with Doors to Freedom for emergency support, and an agreement with Dorchester School District 2 regarding School Resource Officers and K-9 units.

The meeting will also include two public comment sessions: one specifically for items on the agenda and another open to any topic. Residents are reminded that public comments cannot be used for political purposes, in compliance with South Carolina State Law (S.C. Code Ann. § 8-13-765).

Concluding the meeting, an Executive Session will be held to discuss legal and personnel matters, including a personnel appointment to the Planning Commission and legal issues related to a cyber ransomware attack.

Local residents interested in these matters are encouraged to attend the meeting or watch the livestream at www.summervillesc.gov.
