PREVIEW: Summerville Town Council to Vote on Vape Ban in Public Spaces at October 10 Meeting



The Summerville Town Council is set to meet tomorrow, October 10, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the Annex Building (200 South Main Street), with key agenda items including a vote on banning smoking and vaping at Town events, public parks, and recreational areas. Other topics to be discussed include rezoning proposals, an $11 million waterworks bond, and a new disc golf course at Brown Family Park.


Key Agenda Items:


1. Smoking and Vaping Ban in Public SpacesThe Council will hold the second and final reading of an ordinance to prohibit smoking and vaping in Town-owned recreational facilities, parks, playgrounds, and public areas. This initiative is aimed at fostering a healthier public environment for residents and visitors alike.


2. Rezoning Discussions Several final rezoning readings are on the agenda, including a proposal to rezone 4.67 acres at 122 Pebbles Lane from General Residential (GR-5) to Agricultural Conservation (AC), and a land swap affecting properties on White Boulevard and Pamela Lane.


3. $11 Million Waterworks and Sewer Bond The Council will also review the first reading of an ordinance to issue a Waterworks and Sewer System Revenue Bond of up to $11 million, designed to address infrastructure improvements in the rapidly growing town.


4. Board Membership Increases Proposals to expand membership on the Tree Protection Board and the Historic District/Board of Architectural Review will also be discussed, potentially adding more community representation.


5. Sheep Island Development Agreement Proposed amendments to the Sheep Island Development Agreement will also be reviewed, including adding a new development partner and removing certain property management requirements.


6. New Disc Golf Course Proposal A proposal for a 9-hole disc golf course at Brown Family Park is set for consideration, potentially adding a new recreational facility for Summerville residents.


Public Participation


Public comments are welcome during the meeting, with one session dedicated to agenda-specific items and another for general topics.


The meeting will conclude with an executive session addressing personnel matters and potential annexation projects in Berkeley and Dorchester Counties.
