South Carolina's Annual Tax-Free Weekend for Back-to-School Shopping Begins

Summerville, S.C. – Get ready for back-to-school shopping without the extra cost of sales tax! South Carolina's annual tax-free weekend kicks off on Friday, August 2, and runs through Sunday, August 4, offering shoppers the chance to purchase a variety of items tax-free.

During this 72-hour event, items such as clothing, accessories, shoes, school supplies, backpacks, and computers are exempt from the state's 6% sales tax as well as any applicable local taxes. These tax exemptions apply to both in-store and online purchases.

Last year, shoppers took advantage of this opportunity, spending over $30.4 million on tax-free items, according to the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

However, not all items are eligible for the tax exemption. Items excluded from the tax-free status include goods used for trade or business, layaway items, clothing and footwear rentals, cosmetics, eyewear, furniture, and jewelry.

The tax-free weekend begins at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday of August and lasts until midnight on Sunday. For more detailed information on which items are exempt and which are not, please visit the South Carolina Department of Revenue’s website.

Happy shopping, Summerville! Enjoy the savings while preparing for the upcoming school year.
