SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - The Summerville community mourns the loss of beloved barber, Jerome "Romie" Simmons, who passed away on Wednesday, January 25th. He was 85 years old.
Simmons was the proud owner of the iconic Simmons Barber Shop located on Main Street in downtown Summerville, which was in operation for over 50 years.
Jerome was born on August 31st, 1937, in St. George, and after graduating from Summerville High School, he pursued his passion for barbering by attending college in Jacksonville, FL. After his father, Jonathan, passed away, he took over the family business and continued to serve his customers with his exceptional skills.
The obituary notes that Simmons was always willing to lend a helping hand and would go to nursing homes, hospitals, or wherever his customers needed him.
A visitation for Simmons will be held on January 28th from 11 a.m. to noon at the Summerville Baptist Church, followed by a funeral service at noon. The burial will take place at Dorchester Memory Gardens.
